Titre:
Geodesics on Platonic Solids
Resumé:
In joint work with David Aulicino and Pat Hooper, we study closed
saddle connections on surfaces of Platonic solids, viewed as
k-differentials- in particular, we show that there are 31 equivalence
classes (up to the action of the Veech group of a natural cover) of
closed saddle connections on the dodecahedron, while there are no
closed saddle connections on any other Platonic solid. This answers a
question of D. Fuchs. We will also describe some of the history of the
subject of geodesics on polyhedra, which goes back to at least 1906 and
the work of Staeckel and Rodenburg.
